CIPP PASS - Website banner

In April earlier this year, we received the fantastic news that Cantium obtained the prestigious Payroll Assurance Scheme (PAS) accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP). Whilst this means a great deal to us, it may not mean so much to you. However, accreditations like such are an important factor to consider when selecting a Payroll provider.

What is the Payroll Assurance Scheme accreditation?

The Payroll Assurance Scheme accreditation is awarded from the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP), the only UK Chartered Institute for payroll, pensions and reward professionals, as part of its ‘flagship payroll audit solution’, an audit which has been approved and developed in partnership with HMRC.

The CIPP considers the accreditation as the gold standard for processes and people in the payroll industry. It’s currently the only voluntary accreditation on the market and the audit aims to offer employers and bureaux confidence in their payroll services, as well as help to isolate any issues, offering the best practice solution to mitigate risk as required.

How we achieved it

To achieve the accreditation, we first had to undergo the Payroll Assurance Scheme test, which is divided into two separate parts. Part one is to inspect the payroll processes, and part two inspects the learning and development of the staff within the payroll function. Each part is otherwise known as ‘The Process Module’ and ‘The People Module’.

The process module

  • Multiple structured in-depth questions and document checks on your payroll and associated processes
  • Checks that appropriate controls are in place to reduce payroll errors
  • All payroll processes are fit for purpose for the company’s requirements
  • Suitable processes are in place for preparing for legislative and organisational changes
  • The CIPP Payroll Assurance Scheme process will also highlight areas for development and improvement.

The people modules

  • Diagnosis of skills levels and learning and development needs
  • Appraisals and setting objectives which link into the organisation’s overall mission and vision
  • Measures to establish whether learning and development undertaken has been effectively to encourage life-long learning

During the early stages of the process, the CIPP also provided us with a checklist, identifying 14 categories that were assessed; within the categories, there are around 60 sub-categories.

Much to our delight, we received fantastic feedback from our assessor: “I have not previously seen such obvious unity & passion right across such a large team with such a very diverse range of work roles & customers… Managers & staff alike all deserve high credit for the level of performance & attention to priorities. In addition, the managers are all keen to identify & promote further improvements & further business expansion into new areas.”

What does this mean for us?

The PAS accreditation is a huge honor to everyone at Cantium who helped to achieve it. This will help us improve our processes which lead to greater effectiveness and efficiencies within the payroll function. Using the PAS accreditation logo allows us to demonstrate our organisation’s dedication to compliance and best practice to new and existing customers. Achieving the accreditation has also provided us with the opportunity to improve our service levels for both our colleagues and our customers.

What does this mean for others?

Payroll fraud is a fast-growing scam and companies must be vigilant to protect their business and the people within it. In 2017 alone, UK payroll services accounted for up to £17 billion in payroll fraud. Moreover, data security is more important than ever before, as a result of growing security breaches and the introduction of GDPR in May 2018. Businesses in need of payroll services seek providers whom they can fully trust. The PAS accreditations offer a peace of mind to those who are seeking a payroll provider, as it recognises that the organisation is dedicated to compliance and best practice in payroll and have suitable processes in place for preparing and delivering legislative changes.

We take pride in supporting businesses of all shapes and sizes with their Payroll and HR Administration, as well as HR Consultancy, Recruitment, DBS checks, Employee Assistance Programmes and Organisational Wellbeing.
